I might’ve not been too clear in that description in my article. A myth has been going around that kamikaze pilots were only given enough fuel to make it to their targets thus making ‘chickening out’ of the task basically impossible. This would’ve meant that the pilots had 2 choices. Perform their task and be honoured on the mainland as heroes or dive into the sea and die dishonourably.

This was but a myth as these pilots were highly valued by the Japanese and wasting them in such a manner could not be afforded. This is why those who returned from their missions unsuccessfully were not executed, only reprimanded.
